Andrew B. Hicks, Director of Bands, Hickory High School
Mr. Hicks is a graduate of Appalachian State University, where he earned a degree in Music Education: Instrumental (K-12). He studied under Dr. Karen Robertson, past professor of Horn at Appalachian State University, and student taught under Haskew Smith, past Director of Bands at Newton-Conover High School.
Mr. Hicks began his professional teaching career in Northampton County as the Band Director at Conway Middle School. He then became the band director at Starmount Middle School and assisted with the Saint Stephens Marching Indians.
Mr. Hicks has always been drawn to music and started playing horn at 12 years old. He has performed in various ensembles such as the Western Piedmont Youth Symphony, Hickory Community Theater Pit Orchestra, Appalachian State "Marching Mountaineers" Marching Band, Appalachian Symphony Band, Appalachian Wind Ensemble, Appalachian Horn Choir, Appalachian Symphony Orchestra, Hayes School of Music Brass Quintet, Appalachian Jazz Ensemble, and others.
From 2017-2019, Mr. Hicks served as a principal horn player within the Appalachian State University ensembles. In 2018, Mr. Hicks served as the Organizations and Volunteer Coordinator for the North Carolina Bandmasters Northwest All-District Honor Band Clinic. Mr. Hicks was also active in organizations on campus serving as a member, warden, and music director of the Rho Tau Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and Vice-President on the Appalachian Chapter of the National Band Association.
Mr. Hicks resides in Conover, NC.
